The Challenge

A popular, long running Australian television serial needed to provide sun and rain shelter for filming outdoors.  The  cover needed to provide rain and UV protection to the actors whilst allowing filming to continue in natural light to allow the appearance of an outdoor setting. A fabric with high light transmission was required.

The Solution

Hiraoka’s SA-1800-C was selected for this application due to the excellent light transmission and the heat reflective characteristics provided by the special coating. This material caters to the significant variation in weather conditions in Melbourne – cold, wet conditions through to extreme heat.

The filming company has significantly reduced the amount of time delayed due to inclement or extreme weather. The actors and production staff are delighted with the result.

The fabrication and installation was undertaken by Pattons, engineering from Lightweight Structures Advisory Service.

The Product

SA-1800 C is a semi-transparent material designed for structures that require high light transmission. The fabric is designed to reflect infra-red light to reduce solar heat gain. It has a PDVF top surface for excellent weathering protection and dirt resistance.
